ATVs and Public Lands

June 2009

A proposed rule change by the Agency of Natural Resources that would open up state lands to recreational ATV use is stirring up controversy, and the Vermont media are giving it considerable attention. VNRC's Forest Program Director Jamey Fidel appears in coverage on the issue from the Vermont Press Bureau, as well as a report from Vermont Public Radio's John Dillon. ATVs on Public Lands

This change in use, if enacted, would be disastrous. ATVs will destroy our trails. Currently snowmobiles are permitted but this is during the winter with snow cover. ATVs SHOULD NOT ever be allowed on public lands. This would be impossible to police and an affront to those of us who enjoy the peace and quiet of our woodlands. The Green Mountain Club and other organizations dedicated to the preservation of our trails have devoted countless hours to trail maintenance. This would be destroyed by ATV use. The proposed use of "just a tiny portion of public land to connect trails" simply opens the door to more and more with no funds to police useage.
