Letter to the Editor

Letters to the editor can be one of the most effective ways of reaching a large audience for free. They are also the most democratic elements of the media in that on the letters to the editor page there are a wide variety of opinions and ideas that are freely published and discussed.

Effective letters to the editor are under 250 words, simple and straight forward. Make your main point in the first paragraph and use the remaining space to substantiate it. Most all news outlets ask you to provide your full name, daytime phone number and email address (if applicable) so that they can verify your identity.

Many papers will also print letters even if they are written from outside of the paper's geographic location. Get the most bang for your buck by sending your letter to all of the media outlets.
