![]() Current IssuesThoughts on the Future of VermontIn response to the Vermont Council on Rural Development’s request for VNRC’s thoughts on the future of Vermont, Executive Director Elizabeth Courtney outlines some of the priorities that will guide this organization far into the future, including stemming the privatization of the world’s water resources, curbing the loss of Vermont’s farm and forestlands and combating climate change and achieving energy security. At the Legislature, VNRC - and Vermont - Wins! When the last gavel fell on the 2008 legislative session, it ushered in a new framework for how the state will steward the water most Vermonters drink and the forests and farms that define Vermont. Legislators also took significant strides forward on saving Vermonters money through energy efficiency initiatives and combating the challenge of climate change with a renewed commitment to hammering out the programs that will help Vermont meet its energy needs and generate green, renewable supplies. VNRC Report: Rivers and Streams under threat, ANR failing on enforcementConstruction contractors and the Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) are failing to keep Vermont’s surface waters free of polluting runoff from construction sites. An on-the-ground review by the Vermont Natural Resources Council (VNRC) in the summer of 2007 revealed that developers across Vermont who are constructing single family residences, residential subdivisions, and linear projects as well as commercial properties are routinely violating the federal Clean Water Act and that ANR is failing to bring enforcement actions for those violations. VNRC Statement on Advancement of the Energy Efficiency & Affordability ActThe two House committees charged with considering a bill that would expand thermal efficiency and renewable energy opportunities for Vermonters recently passed those bills out of committee. While S.209 is a step forward, unfortunately the current version of the bill fails to seize on some of the most promising opportunities to achieve savings. At the top of the list of lost opportunities in the current version of the bill is placing the purview of thermal efficiency programs under the umbrella of Vermont’s internationally acclaimed efficiency utility. |
