![]() Action AlertsStop the Circ Highway!Remember the “Circ?” Well, that high-cost highway project in Chittenden County (which Bill McKibben calls a “global warming machine”) is back in the limelight at a critical stage of review. The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) needs to hear from as many Vermonters as possible by August 27 on the project. Our view? It’s a bad idea. It would destroy wetlands, waste money, and promote sprawl – all to save 4 minutes of travel time for the average commuter. This Is It: Push Congress to Pass Comprehensive Climate Bill
VNRC Co-Hosts Forums on Biomass EnergyMore and more Vermonters are seeking homegrown solutions to meet our energy needs. A diverse collaborative of stakeholders is convening a series of public forums - June 2, June 9 and July 8 - to add to the dialogue about how Vermont communities might harness the potential of forest biomass to help provide renewable energy on a sustainable basis. The Vermont Yankee VoteVery soon, Vermont State Senators will consider the future of Vermont’s old and unreliable nuclear power plant and likely vote on whether or not to allow the ailing reactor to operate past its scheduled March 2012 shutdown date. Let your voice be heard! Close Vermont Yankee As Scheduled: There’s a Better Way ForwardThe operating license of Vermont’s aging and decrepit nuclear power plant is scheduled to terminate in 2012. Vermont Yankee’s owners, Louisiana-based Entergy, are seeking a 20-year extension to operate the imperiled facility. Vermonters have a huge stake — and, thankfully, a voice — in what will likely be one of the most significant decisions regarding public safety, our energy future, and Vermont’s reputation for environmental stewardship, that the state will ever face. Read VNRC's reasons for closing the plant, as scheduled, in 2012. Vermont Yankee Misleads VermontersYesterday news broke that Entergy Nuclear, the parent company of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, misled Vermont regulators — under oath — when it denied the existence of underground pipes beneath the plant. Within the context of other recent news — the fact that a dangerous radioactive isotope called tritium has been leaking into the groundwater around the plant — Entergy’s ‘mischaracterization’ represents an egregious breach of the public trust. Help Keep ATVs Off of State LandOpening state lands to ATVs is shortsighted, ill-conceived public policy. And now is the time to elevate this critical issue and stop the idea in its tracks. Help Pass a U.S. Climate Bill! This summer and fall, the U.S. Senate will debate a much-needed piece of legislation to address the world’s greatest environmental challenge — climate change. While the ‘American Clean Energy & Security Act’ — H.R. 2454 — is far from perfect, it is the essential step forward this nation must take on this critical issue… now. Find out how you can help make it stronger - and make it happen. Proposal to Open State Lands to ATVs: Take Action!Vermonters who care about the integrity of our state lands should act swiftly to make your voice heard on a proposed rule change now under consideration which would open up state lands to All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Find out how you can help. Tell the Governor to Support Renewables and Efficiency!
